A record run chase of over 8 runs per over helped India to an astonishing win and also obtain the much needed Bonus Point.
India were set to make 321 rns to win in 40 overs to gain a bonus point to enable them to be in contention for the best of three finals in the ‘Tri’ series Commonwealth Bank sponsored tournament involving India, Sri Lanka and hosts Australia. Today’s match was the 11th qualifying match and it was crucial to both Sri Lanka and India, both in desperation to enter the final with Australia who has already booked their berth to play in the best of three finals.
India having won the toss took the ideal decision in asking Sri Lanka to bat first. They wanted to know how much they needed to chase to win with a bonus point and also they wanted to know how the pitch would behave when they batted second. There was another factor they were concerned which was the rain forecast. Although there was a delayed start to their innings the time lost was not sufficient to bring about the D/L method into play.
The architect of the Indian victory was their No 4 batsman Virat Kohli whose swashbuckling unbeaten innings of 133 made in just 86 balls which included 16 fours and 2 sixes paved the way for this sensational victory which will no doubt would rewrite the record books in the annals of ODI cricket. Gautham Gambhir coming in at No 3 added a hurricane 115 runs in just 18.1 overs with Kohli.
After this unexpected historical win India and Sri Lanka are equal in the points table with 15 points each. However whether Sri Lanka would enter the best of three final would all depend on the final qualifying match against Australia due to be played on the 2nd of March at the MCG. In the event Sri Lanka loses it will be India who will play Australia in the best of three finals by virtue of the fact that India had beaten Sri Lanka twice in the qualifying round matches although at present Sri Lanka are ahead of the net run rate and have the same number of points as India. The points table is appended below:
Sri Lanka’s 320 for the loss of 4 wickets in 50 overs is an challenging total to chase in this crucial ‘MUST’ win match for both teams.
DILSHAN 160 n.o, SANGAKKARA 105
The Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and sent Sri Lanka into bat. The opening partnership between skipper Mahela Jayewardena and Tillekeratna Dilshan realised 49 runs in 12 overs before Mahela was dismissed for 22.Sangakkara joined Dilshan and the pair flayed the Indian attack, while accelerating the scoring rate simultaneously.
The pair was together until the 45th over adding a record 2nd wicket stand of 200 runs, both scoring centuries. The 200 run partnership was made in 210 balls. Sangakkara was first to go bowled by Praveen Kumar for 105 runs made in just 87 balls which included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Dilshan was joined first by Tissara Perera and then by Angelow Mathews who were both dismissed cheaply for 3 and 14 runs respectively. At the end of 50 overs Dilshan remained unbeaten having opened the innings with 160 runs compiled in 165 balls which included 11 fours and 3 sixes, a magnificent one day inning.
At the end of the allotted 50 overs Sri Lanka had score a massive 320 for the loss of only 4 wickets a task very difficult to chase taking into consideration that to obtain a BONUS POINT India have to achieve the task in 40 overs at 8 runs per over. India of course will definitely try to achieve it.
