RUKMANI DEVI STATUE ATTACKED

Rukmani Devi statue damaged

Certain unidentified unscrupulous elements had caused damage to the ‘Rukmani Devi statue erected at the ‘manoichena’ General Cemetry at Periyamulla, Negombo.
Her name and details of her birth and death along with the fence that covered her statue have been damaged. It is reported that Police has arrested 7 suspects in this regard. It is learnt that a former Member of Parliament in the Negombo area is also among the suspects.
Rukmani Devi, as all are aware was the pioneer illustrious actress Sri lanka produced at the beginning of our film industry who was hailed and acclaimed as the female ‘idol’actress of our silver screen having acted in about 98 films. At the time she met with her fatal road accident in the year 1977 she was only 55 years old. Her tragic death made the whole country shocked with grief.
Every year on the day of her death anniversary, a well organised commemorative ceremony is held near her statue. Her 33rd death Anniversary falls on the 28th October 2011.

  2. The Journalist has exaggerated several parts of the story, while dropping the important elements of this story, violating the "ideal mission" of Journalism. I'm quite frustrated and disappointed with the above report.
The former Member of the Parliament accused of the above so called "attacking" is Mr. Ananda Munasinghe who is "ALSO" the Son-in-Law of Sir B.A.W Jayamanne, is the rightful owner to this grave at present. He did not attack this, but removed the ridiculously ugly statue which was erected by one of Rukmani Devis "followers" who claims to be her biggest fan. This statue can now be seen at the Negombo Police, and it does not resemble Rukmani Devi At all, but on a side note I would it say it looks quite similar to a wicked witch in a children's fairy tale. Also this statue and the large fence were positioned to cover the entire grave, which sealed it completely from anyone occupying it again. As some of you may not be aware, there are descendents of Rukmani and Eddie in Negombo, who has the right to be buried in the same grave as it’s the family grave rightfully assigned to the generation. Mr. Ananda Munasinghe along with his helpers (Not unidentified attackers) carefully “removed” the statue in order to erect a new one and to mark the names of the others who were earlier buried in the same grave, as it was forgotten by her "fan" who erected the statue on purpose. If the statue was “attacked” as mentioned above, “The Nation” would not report it as the statue was dislodged. If you dig deep into the story of the statue’s origin, you may find that the “fan” in fact introduced a fund in order to collect money to erect this statue, and the cost of this ridiculously unpleasant statue was only a little part of the donations she received and the rest was unaccounted. Her assets were updated with a brand new car at the same time period and I do not think it’s a coincidence.
Furthermore it is said that the incident of Mr. Ananda Munasinghe being arrested without a clear accusation, and proper background to the story, is perpetrated by a rival opponent of his time, now residing in Negombo who is also an active member of the popular party. The report of the statue being attacked is used as a story to dishonor Mr. Ananda Munasinghe. This incident depicts the disgraced status of this nation’s politics, and how it has corrupted not one but many cultural aspects of this country, with the latest addition being the Sinhalese Film Industry.

Common sense is that which tells us the world is flat.

    Thank you.

  3. We're swamped with journalism experts now? Is posting 'anonymous' part of this expertise? Any everyone is suppose to just take your word for it?

From one anonymous to another, all we know is that some guy goes and disturbs a dead woman's grave; that's a low-life, no matter how you cut it. Is he a former MP; then, no one would be faulted for thinking he must be crash-strapped now, not getting part of the action, and is looking to sell any property that he can make a claim on; including cemetery plots. You'll see if the people of Negombo are even worse than him by watching to see if they'll vote for this guy again.
