Resounding win for the UPFA
In the just concluded Local Council elections the, UPFA secured a sweeping resounding victory. Out of the total 65 local election bodies the UPFA emerged easy winners in 45 of them, 18 Local councils were won by the TNA while 2 were won by the TULF.
The most significant factor in this election is that the UNP or the JVP could not secure a single a Local Council.
BUDDHADASA WAS NOT SENT TO A’ HOME FOR THE AGED’:
During the Local council election for the Kaduwela Local council there was a neck to neck battle between the UPFA candidate and Budddhika Thushara of the National Freedom Party.On the platform the leader of NFP, Minister Wimal Weerawansa had said that Buddhadasa, now needs to be sent to ‘Home for the Aged’. However in complete contrast to his statement Buddhadasa polled 29719 preferential votes while Buddhika Thushara polled only 23612 preferential votes.
LIST OF THOSE WHO POLLED THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PREFERETIAL VOTES:
The most number of preferential votes were polled by Upul Mahendra Rajapaksa of the UPFA contesting for the Attanagalla Council election by polling 32164, while in the Kesbewa Electorate, UNP’S Lotion Leonard Karunaratna polled 31930 preferential votes.
HISTORY WAS CREATED AT WELIKANDA LOCAL COUNCIL BODY DEVOID OF AN OPPOSITION:
For the first time in the history of Local Council elections, the UPFA 8 of the 9 seats were won while the other solitary seat was by a member of the Muslim Congress Party, thus creating a vacuum in the opposition.
