VEDDA’S AT CRICKET

VEDDA’S TO START PLAYING COMPETITIVE CRICKET
What games did the Aboriginal inhabitants, the Vedda’s play other than their traditional ‘KIRI HORA’ dance with bows and arrows?
Does anyone believe that the inhabitants from our most ancient times have practiced and formed a cricket team? They are due to participate in their inaugural cricket tournament today at the Kurunegala Welagedera International Cricket Stadium. The entire squad comprises of 15 members. They commenced practice sessions yesterday mainly to enhance their skills and to acclimatise to the conditions at the Welagedera Stadium.
The skipper of the Aboriginal team is the son of their present leader Uruwarige Wannieththange’s son Uruwarige Heenbanda. In this tournament the Vedda’s team is to play against a team of children suffering from the ‘Thelesimia’ disease and against a team comprising of film stars. This tournament is sponsored by ‘SIRASA SPORTS’ and organised jointly by the Kurunegala Municipal Council and the Youth Scouts Society.
