Sumana Amarasinghe in ICU .... after food poisoning in Chennai
Cinema actress Sumana Amarasinghe (wife of Mr. Roy de Silva) presently is in bed at the ICU of a private hospital in Colombo, doctors have mentioned that her condition is at risk. This actress who had acted in a number of films including Sunethra, Sukiri Kella and Lokuma Hinawa today reclines, confined to bed.
Film Producer Roy de Silva spoke of her health condition: "Life is a strange thing. Nobody can understand it. I don't like to even think of that day. But I'll briefly tell about what happened. Our new film is 'Sihina Lovak Soya'. Most of its shooting was done in America.
So we planned to hold its premier show in America on September 26th. Before we start a special thing like this we usually attend to activities related to our religion and vows.
One or two days passed by in the most normal way. After that we came to Chennai. The food and drinks there is horrible. But of course how can we stay without eating or drinking! Sumana saw a type of drink and brought it and drank it. From that time onwards Sumana began to have a stomachache. It became worse and worse and never got better.
How can we decide as to whether there was any medicine in a place where there was not proper food or drink? As soon as possible Sumana was brought back to Sri Lanka.
She showed somewhat of a half-conscious state. At Katunayaka she lost her conscience completely. Straightaway she was brought to Central Hospital.
An infection had got into her body from the drink she had taken. It had made an impact and influence on her liver as well as the heart and at a certain point her heartbeat too stopped.
Finally, doctors called me to a side and told me to forget about Sumana.
Whatever anybody says, I know that Sumana would not be leaving me in such a hurry. I prayed to god as much as possible. I asked the doctors to continue treating Sumana as much as possible. They then gave her an injection. After that she got some life again.
She was still breathing with the machines in the ICU. But she is much better now, compared to the condition she was brought in.
When I go near and say, "Sumana", she senses it. When I addressed her like that one day, two drops of tears came rolling down her cheeks. I felt so sad. Fortunately the infection has not reached her brain. If not, the damage done to Sumana's life would be worse.
It's now 40 years since we got married. She was first my friend, then a sister; next, a wife .... and now my mother. This person who is ailing is my mother".
Let us wish a quick recovery to Sumana Amarasinghe!
