Setting aside the family power, thug power, and media power that shaped the country's politics for decades, the current government, built solely on people's power, will not be deterred by Colombo-centric palace conspiracies, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized. Addressing a massive public rally held yesterday (11) in Nikaweratiya under the theme 'Our Government: Two Years, Good for the Country,' the President stated this, warning that even thinking of overthrowing the government through palace conspiracies is a futile act.
The rally was held with the participation of a large number of people, including the Maha Sangha (Buddhist clergy). The President also elaborated on the steps taken to rebuild the country's foundation over the past two years, as well as the challenges encountered during this period. He specifically highlighted the government's progress in suppressing drugs and the underworld, presenting statistics. Within these two years, 3511 kg of heroin (equivalent to sixty fertilizer bags), 6206 kg of 'ice' (crystal methamphetamine), and 308 kg of cocaine have been seized. Additionally, 93 T-56 firearms, 139 pistols, and 104 revolvers have been seized from the underworld. The President accused certain parties, agitated by these operations, of using drug money to attack the government through some media channels. However, he emphasized that underworld members, no matter where they hide in the world, will be found and brought back to the country.
Establishing the rule of law has been a primary objective of the government. He recalled that in the past, individuals with political power at the village level engaged in illegal activities such as felling trees, sand mining, and illicit brewing, operating above the law, and even the police were unable to take action against them. However, he stated that today there are no special laws for anyone, and the law is applied equally to all, regardless of status. To strengthen the law, the government has taken steps to increase the number of police officers to eighty thousand and allocate significant funds for the Attorney General's Department and the judicial system. Additionally, a systematic prison system is being built for the rehabilitation of offenders. The President pointed out that those who are now taking to the streets and shouting that the government should be overthrown are the same people who, in the past, operated above the law and enjoyed privileges.
The President reiterated that individuals who plundered public property will not be allowed to hide and live anywhere in the world. He stated that those who have fled to countries with international agreements will be brought back to Sri Lanka, indicted, and swiftly prosecuted. He further declared that even if these efforts take some time, these individuals will be continuously brought before the law during the remaining three years and the next term of office.
