Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is currently remanded at Welikada Prison, has been admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital. The Prisons Media Spokesperson stated that she was transferred to the National Hospital based on the medical recommendations of the prison hospital.
During the previous court hearing, her lawyer presented facts about her various illnesses.
According to her affidavit, the first report regarding her heart condition dates back to 2019. A CT Coronary Angiogram performed at Nawaloka Hospital on September 7, 2019, identified plaque deposits and minor constrictions in all three major coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart, a condition noted as "Triple Vessel Disease" in medical reports. She also stated that high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol are among the conditions she faces. Shiranthi Rajapaksa informed the court that she was re-admitted to Nawaloka Hospital on September 15 of this year due to nausea, extreme fatigue, dizziness, and physical discomfort, where she received treatment under Professor Arjuna de Silva. She stated that the dizziness she experienced at that time was identified as Vertigo, and medical reports also indicated the presence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The affidavit further states that she was prescribed medications including Aspirin, Crestor, and Nebivolol for these conditions.
She informed the court that subsequent cardiac tests conducted in Singapore revealed her Total Coronary Calcium Score as 1022 on September 21. Medically, a score exceeding 400, which measures the amount of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries, is considered a high-risk level. Furthermore, these tests identified a calcium-containing plaque deposit in the carotid artery region of her neck. According to the affidavit, Cardiac Specialist Dr. Dinesh Nayar prescribed medication for her and also provided Nitromint Spray for immediate use if chest pain occurs.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa had emphasized in her affidavit to the court that she continuously requires specialist medical supervision and treatment, and that her life could be at risk if such treatment is not received. A few days prior to this hospitalization, she had been referred to hospitals due to an eye ailment. Accordingly, on October 8, she was referred to a prison specialist doctor, and subsequently, on October 9, she was taken to the Colombo National Eye Hospital for further specialist treatment. After receiving treatment there, she was brought back to the prison.
She, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested on October 7 at her residence on Poorwarama Road, Kirulapana, by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. This arrest was made after recording a statement from her for nearly two hours regarding alleged financial irregularities and transactions related to an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya Foundation.
Meanwhile, Shiranthi Rajapaksa's anticipatory bail application, filed with the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court requesting to prevent a possible arrest by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in connection with investigations related to the Siriliya Saviya Foundation, had also been rejected earlier. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Shiranthi Rajapaksa's husband, is also currently at Nawaloka Hospital. According to her upcoming legal process, while she is in prison and hospitalized, she is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court tomorrow, October 13. Additionally, she is also scheduled to be produced before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division for further questioning.
