Gunshots heard from the direction of Kalutara Prison due to an aerial parcel

A sudden gunshot echoed this afternoon (21) within the premises of Kalutara Prison. This was due to the actions of a suspect who attempted to throw parcels containing prohibited items into the prison, despite the strict surveillance of security forces.

According to prison sources and departmental information, the incident began when an individual approached the prison wall from outside. Officers on duty at the watchtowers observed him preparing to throw several parcels into the prison. Security officers immediately intervened and instructed the individual to leave the area.

However, disregarding the officers' warnings, the individual threw the parcels he had brought into the prison. Immediately, an officer from the watchtower, aiming to apprehend the suspect, fired his firearm into the air. Nevertheless, the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shot was fired, and officers were unable to arrest him.

Two parcels thrown by the fleeing individual landed inside the prison and were immediately taken into custody by prison officials. According to the Prisons Department, upon inspecting the parcels, 06 mobile phones as well as drugs including 'kudu' (heroin) and 'ganja' (cannabis) were found inside.
