During the Satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park, Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thero made the following statement to the media this evening (21).
"The government is further demonstrating and publicizing its secularism and anti-Sasana stance, adopting a silent policy as if deaf or mute after taking medicine. The Ministry of Buddha Sasana was established by former President Ranasinghe Premadasa through a separate ministry for the Sasana, and the longevity of the Sambuddha Sasana was legally affirmed through the Ninth Amendment to the Constitution, to ensure the government's accountability process is fulfilled very well.
Unfortunately, today there is no Minister of Buddha Sasana, nor is he a Buddhist. The Deputy Minister of Buddha Sasana is a Calvary, another Deputy Minister is a 'Heeraluwa' (a derogatory term), and the other minister is a Maulavi. So, we can only tell this to the gods given by the Buddha to protect the Sasana. Therefore, isn't it Vajrapani Deva? To the demon. The people of our country, moved by compassion and shaken by the harm being done to the Sambuddha Sasana, are now carrying torches, and the curse they invoked has struck, causing chaos everywhere today.
It's been two years since the JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, often referred to as 'Malimawa' or 'National People's Power') formed a government. Now, the 'Malimawa' people, with the 'vaskaviya' (curse poem) activated, are walking street by street, intersection by intersection. They are walking with a few robed monks of the Lenin-Marx sect at the forefront. We say that all those who voted and have not yet corrected their mistake or understood it, we will make them walk on the main road in the sun with this 'vaskaviya'. They have started making them walk now. They have started making them walk now. And we are confident that the Mahanayaka Theros of this country will no longer silently watch this injustice. Also, this secular government, using Gnanasara Thero as a scapegoat, laid hands on the Sambuddha Sasana.
Therefore, from Kandy, we pledged to the Sacred Tooth Relic that just as Gnanasara Thero's freedom, the Sambuddha Sasana in this country will be protected from such 'Parangiyo' (foreigners/colonizers) and carried forward unharmed for another five thousand years on this land of Lanka. In this journey, it has become the task of this era for us, who wear the yellow robe as guardians of the nation, to save this country and the Sambuddha Sasana from this calamity. Therefore, our battle is against 'Parangiyo' who are even worse than the original 'Parangiyo' – these are the 'Pelawatte Parangiyo'. The 'Pelawatte Parangiyo' are acting as agents, taking money from the diaspora and other non-governmental organizations, to carry out this discipline (or destruction/subversion).
Therefore, if the President says that these will not stop even if there are street protests, we say that we will not stop our protests until the President descends from his arrogance. You may recall that when the education reform process began incorrectly, and we acted against it, the same 'lion's roar' was heard. But we built up public protest until that 'lion's roar' became a dog's whimper. Therefore, we say we made requests to the Mahanayaka Theros, we made requests, and the Sangha Councils made separate requests. When our pleas were not heard, we carried out our determined march to the capital, having pledged before the Sacred Tooth Relic. Then we delivered that pledge to the President's office. It was not for nothing; enduring intense heat and incessant rain, we brought a determined journey.
This was the largest Sangha gathering and the largest Sangha protest against this government in history. Today, voters who cast their ballots have withdrawn from the government after seeing the injustices done to the Sasana. The government now has only about three percent support. We say, democratically, let's test public opinion; we are ready. Our struggle is not to overthrow the government; our struggle is to protect the Sambuddha Sasana. We have no political objectives in this. However, we have opened this sacred site, this Satyagraha site, to all people of this country, all nationalities, and all religious adherents, especially Buddhists. Any politician can participate in it; they are also citizens of this country. A responsibility is also entrusted to them."
