Internal sources at the Ministry of Public Security state that if Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, does not appear before the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) before the expiry of the additional period she requested, steps will be taken to impose a travel ban on her through the courts.

She had been informed to appear before the relevant division on September 24 to give a statement regarding an investigation related to the 'Siriliya' foundation, which was initiated under her patronage. She left for Singapore on September 16 for medical treatment, and this official notification was given by police officers at the airport when she commenced her journey.

However, as she needs further medical treatment abroad, she has requested the relevant authorities for an additional 14 days to provide the statement. Ministry sources further reveal that if she does not participate in the relevant investigation within the given grace period, steps will be taken to obtain a travel ban, and if such a court order is issued, there is a possibility of her being arrested upon her return to the island.

A spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, commenting on this matter, pointed out that although an initial date for her return to the island had been communicated, since she is currently abroad for medical treatment, her return will be entirely determined by medical necessities.
