The parade related to the deadly clash at Negombo Prison is being held.

An identification parade for the suspect detainees accused in connection with the fatal clash that occurred at Negombo Prison was held yesterday (22) at the Negombo Magistrate's Court. According to an order by Negombo Chief Magistrate Ms. Sheelani Perera, six suspects with covered faces were presented for this identification parade before Acting Magistrate Mr. Indika Silva.

Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), presenting facts regarding this case, obtained court permission to present five more suspects who could not be produced for the identification parade on that day, on a future date. Additionally, the 72nd suspect in this case, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in the Moratuwa area on September 21, 2026, was also produced before the court with his face covered. Furthermore, an identification parade for the female suspects related to the incident is scheduled to be held on the 29th of this month, and court approval was granted for it.

Investigating officers requested to include six new witnesses, numbered 38 to 44, in the witness list for the identification of suspects, and the Magistrate ordered separate summons to be issued to the 37th witness who did not appear before the court. By mutual agreement of both parties, the re-hearing of this case was postponed until the 29th of this month.

Under the direction of Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandana Kaluarachchi of the Criminal Investigation Department, a team of officers including Chief Police Inspector Karunathilaka, Sub-Inspectors Dulitha Maduranga and Madhusanka, and Police Constables Dulanga, Jayasuriya, Bandara, Anil, Asela, and Herath, filed these facts by submitting a further report to the court.

In this severe clash that occurred inside Negombo Prison on July 05 and 06, ten prison officers and twenty-two detainees lost their lives, and over a hundred people were injured. The Criminal Investigation Department will lead further investigations under charges of homicide, the Public Property Act, and the Firearms Ordinance, and the case is scheduled to be called again on the 29th.
