Priyankara Perera bids farewell

Veteran Sri Lankan singer and actor Mr. Priyankara Perera has passed away at the age of 64. His family members have confirmed that he passed away on the night of September 01, while receiving treatment for an illness for some time at the Colombo National Hospital.

In late 2020, Priyankara was diagnosed with kidney failure. His family and friends publicly appealed for a kidney donor (A+ or O+ blood type) for a kidney transplant. Subsequently, he received treatment, and it was reported that artists made various donations and held Bodhi Poojas for him. Born on April 07, 1962, Mr. Priyankara Perera,


 is the beloved son of the country's renowned and eminent singer J. A. Milton Perera. Carrying on the musical legacy inherited from his father, he entered the field and also worked with his brother Chalaka Chamupathi to re-sing his father's immortal songs. He is the beloved husband of renowned actress Dilhani Ekanayake and the beloved father of Dilmin Perera, who is also involved in the music industry.

He enriched the country's music scene with his unique and familiar voice, gaining immense fan love by singing numerous popular songs including "Supun Sandak" (Full Moon), "Ran Pokunen" (From the Golden Pond), "Sandun Gase Saman Walak" (Jasmine Creeper on a Sandalwood Tree), "Sikuruliya" (Venus), "Agadha Sagaraye" (In the Deep Ocean), "Sihina Dewduwe" (Dream Goddess), and "Sansun Ruwan" (Calm Gem). These songs have become extremely popular among the new generation even today through digital platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

In addition to singing, he ventured into acting in the mid-1980s and contributed his acting talents to over 25 Sinhala films. He portrayed various characters in many films such as 'Madhuri', 'Surangana' (Fairy), 'Seethala Gini Kandu' (Cold Volcanoes), 'Ninja Sri Lanka', 'Araliya Mal' (Frangipani Flowers), 'Durga', 'Laduni Oba Dewaganaki' (Lady, You Are a Goddess), 'Dewiyane Sathya Surakinna' (God, Protect the Truth), 'Pissu Double' (Crazy Double), 'Kiu Sera' (Que Sera), and 'Buffalo Travels', marking his pride in the country's art scene by also getting involved in film production.
