Former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne, who was found guilty on both charges in a case filed by the Bribery Commission regarding pressuring the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Catering to invest funds for providing lunch to the participants of the United People's Freedom Alliance May Day parade in 2014, has been detained in a special secure facility at Welikada Prison.

Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail sentenced the former minister to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment, with 7 years for each charge, ordering the sentences to run concurrently, and additionally imposed a fine of two hundred thousand rupees.

The former minister, who was brought to Welikada Prison around 5 PM yesterday, was given two prisoner jumpsuits, a tin plate, a tin cup, and a basket as soon as he entered through the main gate. After that, he was registered as a prisoner, and the issued prisoner number is to be used until the end of his prison term.

Due to the severe mental distress experienced at the time of sentencing, Mr. Piyankara Jayaratne, like other prisoners admitted to the prison, has been provided with psychological counseling services. Following a medical examination conducted last night, officials have informed him about how to conduct himself in prison and the privileges he is entitled to.

Like a regular prisoner, the former minister, who is taken out of his ward at 6 AM and returned at 5 PM, is not allowed to receive food from home or external parties and must only consume the three meals provided by the prison. Furthermore, during family visits, which are allowed only once a month, only sanitary items may be received.

Meanwhile, former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne is scheduled to be presented before the Welikada Prison Superintendent today. After assessing his skills and abilities, he will be assigned to a suitable work section operating within the prison, such as masonry, carpentry, printing, bakery, or cooking.
