Earl Spencer has apologized to Piers Morgan regarding a false claim contained in a new book about Princess Diana. Spencer had wrongly accused Morgan, a former tabloid editor, in his book of being behind the publication of paparazzi photos that violated Princess Diana's privacy in the mid-1990s.
Morgan had previously threatened to sue Spencer due to the fabricated misinformation and clear falsehoods contained in the work published yesterday. In this memoir, Spencer stated that Morgan was responsible for publishing the secret photographs allegedly taken of Princess Diana at a gym. However, speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday, Morgan stated that the photos in question were published in the Sunday Mirror approximately two years before he became editor of the Daily Mirror. He further told his audience that he was working for The Sun newspaper at that time. The photos in question were published on November 7, 1993, while Morgan joined the Daily Mirror in October 1995.
Acknowledging his error, Spencer issued a statement yesterday apologizing to Morgan. He admitted that he had wrongly assumed Morgan was the editor of the Mirror newspaper during the period in question. Even after the apology, Morgan stated on social media that he would take legal action against Spencer and his publisher, Penguin, to remove the defamatory falsehoods mentioned in the book 'Swan Song', released today, and to obtain compensation for the King's Trust. The book also describes how Spencer personally made phone calls to newspaper editors, asking them not to attend Princess Diana's funeral, and Morgan stated that he was extremely angry when he received that call.
Meanwhile, it is reported that there was not much enthusiasm in bookstores across London on the first day of the release of Spencer's latest work. It is further mentioned that in some stores, including Waterstones in Piccadilly, Europe's largest bookstore, this work, valued at £28, was being sold at half price.
