A 24-year-old woman who applied to become a police constable was assaulted at her home.

A police sergeant accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman who had submitted an application to join the service as a probationary police constable was arrested by Welimada Police on suspicion the day before yesterday (1). The officer arrested was attached to the State Intelligence Service in the Bandarawela Divisional Sector.

This young woman, a resident of the Welimada area, had applied to join the Police Department and had been called for her medical examination on the 10th of this month. Police say that the suspect police sergeant went to her house, claiming he needed to obtain a report about her, and then assaulted her.

Following a complaint received regarding the incident, the police conducted an investigation and arrested the sergeant under the charge of sexually assaulting a woman. He is scheduled to be produced before the court. Furthermore, senior police officers have initiated a disciplinary inquiry against him to suspend him from duty.

On the instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Mahesh Senaratne, who is in charge of Uva Province, a team of officers from the Welimada Police's Children and Women's Bureau is conducting further investigations into this matter.
