The body of Mr. Eraj Ravindra Fernando, the former Mayor of Hambantota Municipal Council, who was found mysteriously dead inside an apartment located in Thimbirigasyaya, Colombo 5, was discovered yesterday (02) by a team of Bambalapitiya Police officers. Investigations have revealed that he died by suicide, hanging himself with a rubber strap from a door approximately 9 feet high in his residence at the Havelock Town 6th Avenue apartment in Bambalapitiya. It is noteworthy that Mr. Eraj Fernando's death occurred in a similar manner to that of Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, the former Executive Director of SriLankan Airlines, who passed away a few months ago.
At the time of his death, he was living alone in this apartment unit, while his wife and two daughters reside in Canada. Police investigations have further revealed that he had been suffering from severe mental stress for a long time and was even receiving medical treatment for it.
Mr. Eraj Fernando, an alumnus of Nalanda College, Colombo, was actively involved in politics from 2011 to 2021. He served as the Mayor of Hambantota twice and gained significant public attention in 2014 for leading a group to chase away a delegation of then-opposition United National Party Members of Parliament who had come to inspect the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port.
On that occasion, he and his group chased after the MPs with a pistol in hand and drove them away. Although he claimed during investigations conducted under the 'Good Governance' government that he had carried a toy pistol that day, he was convicted for the incident and sentenced to five years in prison. However, with the subsequent change of government, he was granted freedom.
Additionally, he had faced charges related to several illegal activities, including the forceful acquisition of land in the Hambantota area. The Bambalapitiya Police are conducting further investigations into this death.
