Two individuals arrested for abusing a cat, causing a social media stir

The police state that two suspects have been arrested in connection with an incident where a video widely circulated on social media showed a cat being tortured.

The Talatuoya Police made the arrests following a complaint lodged against this incident by the Sri Lanka Animal Welfare Coalition.

The two young men arrested are residents of the Athulgama area, aged 18 and 19. They were taken into police custody in the Athulgama area shortly after the complaint was received, and the suspects have stated that this incident occurred about a month ago.

The arrested suspects are to be produced before the Kandy Magistrate's Court, and charges are expected to be filed against them under Section 411 of the Penal Code, Section 63(a) of the Police Ordinance, and legal provisions against animal cruelty.

The Talatuoya Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
