The "Attama" national cleanliness program, implemented island-wide under the theme "'Let's Unite - Build a Clean Sri Lanka'," commenced yesterday (8). This massive citizen operation, organized for environmental protection and community harmony, has taken steps to be implemented across all Grama Niladhari divisions located on the island.

This national program is organized jointly by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the Praja Shakthi Secretariat, and the Sri Lanka Army. Numerous main and regional level cleanliness programs have been planned to cover all twenty-five districts, and these are being directed with the active participation of Praja Shakthi committees under the full supervision of Divisional Secretariats and District Secretariats.

A primary objective of this project is to re-promote Sri Lanka's traditional Attama, or labor exchange concept, among the younger generation and to further strengthen existing cooperation within the community. Additionally, it aims to create a beautiful environment by maintaining cleanliness in public places, including highways and markets, and to foster positive attitudes among the public towards protecting public property by developing underutilized public facilities.
