Tamil Nadu Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin has been arrested by the police at his Chennai residence in connection with a case filed regarding a controversial statement made about popular actress Trisha Krishnan. A statement made by Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding actress Trisha during a protest rally organized by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Thanjavur has led to a major controversy.
The alleged statement made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, a Tamil actor and former Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, while commenting on the Cauvery water dispute during a farmers' protest in Thanjavur, was heavily criticized on social media. He is accused of making a derogatory statement with a double meaning, targeting renowned actress Trisha Krishnan, while also commenting on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and popular actor Vijay.
Commenting on the Cauvery water issue, Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that the current Chief Minister makes no statements about the Cauvery water dispute and only attempts to file false accusations against his DMK party. At that moment, someone from the audience shouted Trisha's name, and in response, a smiling Udhayanidhi proceeded to make a statement with a different meaning, referring to both the Cauvery River and Trisha. Although the crowd present at the time cheered, internet users viewed the incident with extreme criticism.
Social media users, strongly protesting this incident, point out that making such vulgar and derogatory statements, insulting a woman in front of thousands of people, is absolutely unacceptable. They state that such low-level statements are not expected from a public leader, and that this indicates the decline of political culture and the respective political camp. Furthermore, questions have been raised about a leader who claims to hold progressive views displaying such a disrespectful attitude towards women.
Neither actress Trisha nor actor Vijay has yet issued any official response regarding these statements. However, this is not the first time Trisha's name has been used disparagingly while targeting actor Vijay; previously, her legal team had officially responded to a statement made by Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nainar Nagendran, who said that Vijay should come out of Trisha's house before entering politics.
