The Department of Meteorology has issued a special precautionary notice to the fishing and naval communities due to the possibility of strong winds and rough seas in the sea areas around the island. This emergency warning, announced to be effective from 10:30 AM today, will remain in force for a period of 24 hours until 10:30 AM tomorrow.

Specifically, there is a tendency for wind speeds to increase intermittently up to 55-60 kilometers per hour in the coastal sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and Puttalam, as well as in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. The Department of Meteorology indicates that due to these active strong winds, the relevant sea areas could become very rough from time to time.

Additionally, in the other sea areas around the island, wind speeds could intermittently increase to levels between 45 and 50 kilometers per hour, and there is a possibility of rough seas in those areas as well. In light of this risky situation, those engaged in naval and fishing activities should remain vigilant, and the Department of Meteorology further advises to follow essential precautionary measures during sea voyages.
