92,000 Dengue infections and 68 deaths

The National Dengue Control Unit states that the spread of dengue fever is increasing across the island, with the total number of dengue infections reaching 92,011 during the period elapsed this year. The number of deaths due to this disease has risen to 68, and due to the risk of rapid spread of the virus, health authorities have further designated 96 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas across the island as high-risk zones.

The majority of reported infections, totaling 48,725, have been identified from the Western Province, accounting for 52.96% of the total patients. Additionally, 13,533 patients have been reported from the Southern Province, 8,274 from the Central Province, and 7,558 from the Sabaragamuwa Province. On a district basis, the highest number of dengue patients, 19,631, has been reported from the Gampaha District. Furthermore, 18,245 patients have been identified from Colombo, 6,613 from Kandy, 6,036 from Matara, 5,951 from Kalutara, 5,039 from Galle, and 4,935 from the Ratnapura District. It is noteworthy that 3,700 dengue patients alone have been reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area.

The highest monthly number of dengue patients this year was identified in July, totaling 29,968. In June, 21,533 infections were reported, and in May, 8,590 patients were reported. In the first 15 days of August alone, 6,671 dengue infections have been reported.

Given the current situation, health authorities urge the public to take steps to constantly keep their environment clean by destroying dengue mosquito breeding sites. Furthermore, if any symptoms, including fever, are present, it is advised to consult a qualified doctor without delay and seek treatment.
