A 59-year-old man has died after falling approximately 300 feet down a precipice from a rock slab at an aranya senasanaya (forest monastery) located in the Indolawatta area of Ayagama. The person who unfortunately died was a resident of Manana, Dumbara, Ayagama.
This person, who left home on the 14th, stating he was going to a relative's house, did not arrive at the said house. During investigations, his pair of shoes and umbrella were found at the entrance to the 'Gale Pansala' (Rock Temple) forest monastery.
After Ayagama Police were informed about the incident, yesterday (15), officers from the Kuruwita Army Camp and the Police jointly launched a special search operation using drone camera technology. Although the body of the person was found in the approximately 300-foot deep precipice, due to the difficult terrain, security forces were unable to reach the location of the body at that time.
Accordingly, a special operation to retrieve the body from the precipice was carried out today (16) with the participation of Army Commando officers and military personnel. Ayagama Police are conducting further investigations into whether this incident was an accident caused by falling from the rock slab or a suicide.
