The Indian newspaper 'The Hindu' reports, citing official sources, that among those who died in the severe clash that erupted inside the Negombo Prison was a 73-year-old Indian national named Unnikrishnan S.
The total number of deaths due to these clashes, which erupted last Monday after a dispute between two rival gangs escalated, has now risen to 28. This death toll increased with the demise of another prison officer who was seriously injured, and authorities confirm that over 100 people were injured in the incident.Although the Indian High Commission in Colombo has not yet issued an official statement regarding the demise of this Indian national, according to official sources in Colombo, the Indian mission has already sent a diplomatic note (Note Verbale) to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 'The Hindu' newspaper attempted to contact the Sri Lanka Department of Prisons and the Indian High Commission to inquire about the charges against the deceased and the next steps, but no proper response has been received yet.
However, after the riotous situation inside the prison was brought under control, approximately 35 other Indian nationals detained at Negombo Prison were immediately transferred to other prisons across the island for their safety. Due to this uncontrolled clash, which started on Sunday and continued until Monday, authorities took steps to transfer nearly 1,200 inmates from Negombo Prison to other prisons located across the island for security reasons.
