The Thambuththegama Water Supply Project, benefiting 91,810 people in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Thambuththegama, Thalawa, and Galnewa, was vested with the public yesterday (10) afternoon under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Although this project, initiated under a concessionary loan provided by the China Development Bank (CDB), was halted midway due to the debt restructuring process during the period from May 2022 to May 2024, recognizing its national importance, the project activities were successfully completed under the current government using funds from the Sri Lankan government. This water supply project, built as a remedy for the chronic kidney disease prevalent in the area, will also contribute to improving the social and economic conditions of the people in the region.
This project is planned to provide new water connections to 25,000 housing units. Constructed under an allocation of 32 billion rupees, the project consists of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 18,000 cubic meters per day, 03 water towers with a capacity of 1,500 cubic meters each, a water transmission pipeline system of 12.75 km, and a distribution water pipeline system of 158 km.
