A recent study conducted by researchers at Oxford University has revealed that participating in salsa dance classes can help reduce conditions such as depression and anxiety. Salsa dancing, a fusion of Caribbean, Spanish, and African music rhythms, has become extremely popular worldwide and is recognized for contributing to physical health as well as memory development.
For this research, 121 young people aged between 18 and 24 with moderate levels of depression and anxiety were used. During this eight-week program, one group was directed to salsa dance classes, while another group was kept as a control group for testing. At the end of the research, it was found that the group engaged in salsa dancing showed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms and social anxiety compared to the control group.
Brennan Delattre, a PhD candidate involved in this research, states that the systematic pattern and partner-swapping methodology in salsa dance classes make it easier to build social relationships. However, experts point out that further clinical trials are needed, as there is not yet sufficient evidence to recommend this as the sole treatment for depression.
Dr. Daniel Hayes of University College London, who states that the idea of social prescribing is being developed, emphasizes that mental health can be improved by providing opportunities for young people to engage in such enjoyable community-level activities. Researchers further state that while this is not the only way to cure mental illness, such activities provide great support in relieving stress present in current society and building relationships with others.
