Fort Magistrate Mr. Pasan Amarasena today (15) ordered the issuance of an open warrant for Priyanka Nayomali Wijenaike, wife of Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, former Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, in connection with the ongoing investigations into the Airbus transaction.
The Magistrate issued this order after considering the submissions made by the investigating officer representing the Criminal Investigation Department when the case related to this incident was called before the court. As a warrant had been previously issued for her, who is the second suspect in the incident, a request to issue this open warrant in English this time also came to the attention of the Magistrate.
Meanwhile, President's Counsel Mr. Anil Silva, appearing on behalf of former cricketer Mr. Aravinda de Silva and his wife, Mrs. Priyangi Anushka Wijenaike, who had provided bail for the suspect, requested the court to release them from their bail obligations. The President's Counsel stated that this step should be taken as the two sureties have a need to travel abroad, and that there was no impediment to confiscating the Rs. 10 million bail amount deposited for that purpose.
Thereupon, Magistrate Pasan Amarasena, after observing the case file, pointed out that the amount to be deposited in court was not 10 million, but 200 lakhs (20 million) rupees as bail. The Magistrate also stated that before confiscating the said bail money, submissions regarding it should be made before the court. Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered that the reasons for revoking the bail of the sureties who appeared for Priyanka Nayomali, wife of the former Chief Executive Officer, and for confiscating the relevant bail money, be submitted to the court in writing, and scheduled the case to be recalled on the 22nd.
