Motorcycle service by Suwa Sariya in 1990

To prevent delays in essential medical services due to severe traffic congestion in urban areas, the 1990 Suwa Seriya Foundation has made arrangements to introduce a special motorcycle-based emergency medical service. The main objective of this program is to quickly reach patients and initiate basic treatment when ambulance movement is obstructed.

This service has been designed to minimize the critical time gap from the moment an emergency medical need is reported until a Suwa Seriya ambulance arrives at the location. For this purpose, a specially trained medical staff and emergency responders will be deployed, utilizing motorcycles equipped with essential medicines and emergency medical equipment. Expected to be introduced as a pilot project before the end of this year, this service will initially prioritize major densely populated urban areas, including Colombo, which experience high traffic congestion.

This service will provide patients with necessary basic medical services and first aid until a Suwa Seriya ambulance arrives at the relevant location, and will also quickly reach patients in areas difficult for ambulances to access. Meanwhile, steps are being taken to increase the number of Suwa Seriya ambulances available island-wide. This free ambulance service, launched on July 28, 2016, with the support of the Indian government, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. This new motorcycle service will further strengthen the significant mission it has carried out since its inception in providing pre-hospital care during emergencies and disasters, as well as patient transport, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the Suwa Seriya system.
