Authorities have taken steps to immediately transfer the notorious criminal 'Katuwelle Gama Suresh,' suspected of instigating the recent severe clash between inmates and officers at the Negombo Prison, to the high-security Boossa Prison in Galle. Identified as a close associate of 'Kehelbaddara Padme,' a member of an organized crime gang, he is accused of numerous serious offenses, including assault with sharp weapons, armed robberies, and drug trafficking.
Additionally, he faces serious charges for damaging a stupa at a temple in the Narammala area in 2016, and for brutally assaulting and tying up a resident monk and an assistant there. As trials against this suspect are ongoing in the Negombo High Court and Magistrate's Court, he was previously held at the Negombo Prison. This prison, which houses over 2,400 short-term prisoners and suspects, also held about 26 members connected to various underworld gangs, a situation that led to a highly volatile atmosphere on the 5th and 6th of last month.
Due to the horrific clashes that ensued, 26 individuals, including seven prison officers, lost their lives. More than a hundred others were injured and hospitalized due to these clashes, and twenty of those in critical condition were transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, by this morning (07), security forces, including the Sri Lanka Army, had entered the prison premises. By tightening both internal and external security, the security forces have now successfully brought the riotous situation within the prison completely under control.
