Senior Professor Upul Sukasinghe has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He, a leading scholar in Sri Lanka in forestry and environmental management, has rendered long-term service for the academic advancement of the University of Jayewardenepura.
Senior Professor Upul Sukasinghe, who obtained his first degree in Botany (B.Sc. Special in Botany) from the very University of Sri Jayewardenepura where he received his primary education, later obtained his postgraduate degree (M.Sc.) and doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Forest Management from Bangor University in Wales, United Kingdom. He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, rendering exemplary administrative service.
His research areas, as a Senior Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, include forest management, ecosystem modeling, forest carbon stocks (Forest Carbon), and natural resource management. Senior Professor Upul Sukasinghe is also recognized as a leading scientist who conducted numerous pioneering research studies, especially concerning Gyrinops walla and Sandalwood plants in Sri Lanka.
