Samagi Jana Balawegaya Gampaha District Parliamentarian Harshaana Rajakaruna stated in Parliament that although intelligence information regarding the recent violent situation within the Negombo Prison had been received several days prior, authorities failed to take appropriate action. The MP further stated that the current administration lacks proper leadership, management, or prior experience in dealing with such crisis situations, and that the Negombo Prison incident clearly illustrates the overall governance weakness faced by the country.

The MP emphasized that this administrative inefficiency and poor management have been experienced by the farming community as well as the business community in this country before, and that the incident at Negombo Prison was not something that happened overnight. Mr. Harshaana Rajakaruna further stated that despite the government being informed by intelligence agencies three or four days before the incident, responsible parties failed to make proper decisions, leading to this serious situation.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved the appointment of a special committee to conduct a broad and formal investigation into the violent incident that occurred within the Negombo Prison. This decision was made at the Cabinet meeting held on the 6th, and the main task of this committee is to identify the causes that led to the incident, determine future actions to be taken, and submit necessary recommendations to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

Justice Minister Harshaana Nanayakkara made a special statement in Parliament today (07), announcing that the President's Secretary is set to appoint this special investigative committee. Retired Supreme Court Judge Priyantha Fernando will serve as the chairman of this three-member committee, with retired Additional Solicitor General, President's Counsel Milinda Gunathilaka, and President's Counsel Mohan Weerakoon named as its other members.

The relevant committee is expected to thoroughly study all facts related to the incident and submit its final report with recommendations to the government. Meanwhile, immediate investigations into the incident at Negombo Prison have been assigned to the Criminal Investigation Department and the Colombo Crimes Division, as per the Inspector General of Police's order.
