The High Court has ordered a 29-year-old social media influencer, who secretly sold fake luxury fashion items, to pay £213,000 in compensation to leading global fashion brands Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior.
Georgia Aldridge, the founder of 'Sloane House Marketing', a digital marketing agency based in Essex, has over 32,000 followers on Instagram. Although she claimed to generate high profits for brands through her social media posts, it was revealed that she simultaneously used specialized WhatsApp groups to sell fake fashion items obtained via AliExpress, a Chinese online marketplace.
The world-renowned fashion brands had filed lawsuits regarding trademark infringements carried out through her company, 'Rolo Fashion Ltd'. It was further revealed in court that some of the fake items she sold were meticulously designed to be very similar to the original products, hence they were called 'superfakes', and this misled consumers and severely impacted the sales of the original brands.
Judge Richard Hacon, who heard the case, stated that Ms. Aldridge's actions resulted in the relevant companies losing approximately 713 opportunities to sell genuine products and losing licensing revenue from over 4,000 transactions. Although the judge rejected the companies' claim regarding damage to the brands' reputation, he ordered the payment of £213,000 in compensation, considering the lost profits and licensing revenue.
