It is reported that the prison officer who decisively opened fire to rescue fellow officers who were held captive and subjected to inhumane torture during the riot at Negombo Prison, and to prevent inmates from breaking through the main gate and escaping, is currently receiving continuous death threats. Security forces state that most of these death threats are being received via telephone from foreign countries, including Dubai.
Prison employees emphasize that immediate and proper security should be provided to this heroic officer who, despite risking his own life, saved the reputation of the department and the lives of his fellow colleagues. Yesterday, when the subject minister, Harsha Nanayakkara, visited Welikada Prison to pay his last respects to the deceased officers, the officers present surrounded the minister and unanimously requested him to intervene immediately to save the life of the officer who is currently in danger.
During the clash between inmates and officers at Welikada Prison on that day, a group of riotous prisoners blocked the main prison gate, took several officers hostage, and were severely assaulting them. At that moment, this officer acted, aiming his weapon inside the gate and firing several shots, which caused the frightened inmates to abandon the gate and flee. Subsequently, prison officers and the Police Special Task Force immediately opened the gates, entered, and took steps to rescue the officers who were held hostage, as well as the injured inmates, and promptly hospitalized them.
