In connection with the incident of alleged misuse of government vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat, Fort Magistrate Pasana Amarasena yesterday (15) ordered the remand of Sarath Weerawansa, brother of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, until the 22nd of this month. The main accusation against him is causing a financial loss of 9 million rupees to the government by misusing 40 government vehicles that were provided to the National Freedom Front.

The suspect was thus produced before the court after being arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department. When investigations related to this incident named Sarath Weerawansa as a suspect, the Magistrate took steps to ban his foreign travel and also ordered the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration to be informed of the order for immediate implementation. It was also revealed that earlier, when the Criminal Investigation Department reported facts naming him as a suspect, the Fort Magistrate's Court had ordered his arrest and production before the court.

Regarding this incident of misuse of government vehicles, former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and two other individuals had been arrested previously, and they have since been released on bail by the court.
