A recent social survey, conducted over a five-year period, has revealed a wealth of new information regarding the life expectancy of politicians representing Sri Lanka's Parliament and Provincial Councils. According to this study, it has been confirmed that over sixty-five percent of the country's leading politicians live beyond the age of sixty-five.

Furthermore, over ten percent of them have passed the age of seventy-five, and it is reported that five politicians among them are in the age group of eighty or above.

Compared to the lifespan of other professionals in the Asian region, individuals in the Sri Lankan political sphere generally enjoy a longer lifespan, states Specialist Doctor Chamal Sanjeewa, President of the Professional Union Alliance of Doctors for Medical and Civil Rights. He points out that politicians' access to healthcare facilities directly impacts their ability to live longer. Specifically, the opportunity to receive high-standard medical treatment, comprehensive insurance coverage, special privileges when hospitalized, as well as a strong family environment and healthy lifestyles, have been key contributing factors.

Politicians' ability to be free from the financial problems and economic burdens faced by the general public results in lower levels of mental stress, which also has a positive impact on their longevity. According to this survey, while sudden heart attacks, accidents, and alcohol or drug use are common causes of death among younger politicians, the tendency for senior politicians to die from serious illnesses like cancer is relatively very low.

Specialist Doctor Chamal Sanjeewa also stated that preparations are underway to publish the full report related to this survey internationally within the next six months, and it is expected to reveal many new findings. The current age groups of key politicians actively providing leadership in the country's political arena, such as eighty-year-old Mahinda Rajapaksa, seventy-seven-year-old Ranil Wickremesinghe, and seventy-four-year-old Maithripala Sirisena, can be presented as practical evidence confirming the truth of this longevity study.
