
Two women who were walking on the road near the Jalathara Housing Complex on the Hanwella - Homagama No. 293 bus route were tragically killed after being hit by a speeding car. Hanwella Police stated that the two, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being admitted to the Navagamuwa Regional Hospital.
The victims of this unfortunate accident are a 44-year-old single mother named Marasinghe Mudiyanselage Wasanthi, residing in the Ulhitiya area of Giradurukotte, and another single mother, 42-year-old Ranbandara Devayalage Damayanthi, residing in the Demodara area of Bandarawela. Investigations have revealed that these two individuals had come to work at a farm located in the Jalathara area and were staying at a lodging in the same area while engaged in their work.
Police investigations have confirmed that the driver of the car was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was driving the vehicle at a very high speed, and preliminary investigations conducted by the police have also found that after hitting the women, one of them was dragged entangled in the car for about 75 meters.
After causing the accident, the suspect driver fled the scene with his vehicle. However, the police, after examining the security camera (CCTV) footage installed in the area, managed to go to the suspect's house and arrest him. The arrested individual is a 42-year-old resident of the Jalathara Ranala area, who works as an accountant at a private institution.
The inquests into the bodies of the two deceased women are scheduled to be conducted today (08), and the bodies have currently been placed at the Navagamuwa Regional Hospital. The arrested suspect driver is scheduled to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate's Court today, and further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Hanwella Police.
