Two youths from the area have filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court against a group of officers from the Lunuvila Police Station. The petitioners state that the police illegally arrested them, leveled false heroin charges, and unjustly detained them in remand prison for over two months.
This petition has been filed by two youths, Alawathurage Roshan Perera and Silmaguruge Nalin Sampath Fernando, and several officers, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Lunuvila Police Station and the Inspector General of Police, have been named as respondents.According to the petitioner youths, on March 10, 2026, they went to the Lunuvila Police to complain about a threat received from an individual regarding a debt dispute. However, instead of recording their complaint, police officers detained them and subsequently filed false charges of heroin possession. It is stated that they were never informed of the reason for their arrest, and the first petitioner was assaulted by the Officer-in-Charge before being put into the police cell.
In connection with this, the Lunuvila Police presented these two youths before the Marawila Magistrate's Court under charges of drug possession and trafficking. The 'B' reports submitted by the police indicate that these individuals were arrested with drugs at two locations in the Lunuvila area on March 11, 2026. However, the petitioners emphasize that they were arrested inside the police station on the night of the previous day.
Meanwhile, family members of the youths have also complained to the authorities, stating that the police have fabricated this drug case entirely. Accordingly, they have submitted formal complaints regarding this matter to the Inspector General of Police, the National Police Commission, and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
