A 67-year-old woman, who had given eighteen lakhs of rupees to the owner of the elder's home named 'Mapiya Sewana Senehase Kandella' located in Batagoda, Anguruwatota, with the aim of spending her twilight years in freedom, has lodged a complaint with the Anguruwatota Police regarding being verbally abused and chased away when she requested her money back. This woman, a resident of Panadura, stayed at the said elder's home for seventeen days, after which she left unable to bear the inhumane conditions there, and it was thereafter that she requested her money back.
After working as a domestic helper abroad for about twenty-five years and giving the money she earned to her two children, she had thirteen lakhs of rupees remaining. While she was hoping to find shelter somewhere using this money, which was deposited in a state bank in Moratuwa, she came across a video circulating on social media. Deceived by this video, which showed a person named 'Loku Ayya' happily spending time with a group of elders, she called the phone number mentioned in it and expressed her need for accommodation.
Although the management informed her that thirty-five thousand rupees were required as an entrance fee to the elder's home, she stated that she was unable to pay in installments. Instead, she proposed to pay the thirteen lakhs of rupees she possessed in a lump sum to receive accommodation facilities, including food, drink, and medicine, for the rest of her life. Based on this agreement, she arranged to give the said thirteen lakhs of rupees to the owner of the elder's home in Panadura for the first time through an affidavit prepared by a lawyer. Her complaint further states that afterwards, while she was being driven to the elder's home in a car, the owner demanded an additional five lakhs of rupees.
However, during the seventeen days she spent at the said home, this woman was able to understand the true situation there. She told the police that instead of the beautiful environment shown in social media videos, it was a hell-like place where residents were not even given proper food and drink. She had personally witnessed elders suffering from various illnesses being tied with iron chains, and the owner and staff severely torturing residents by beating them with canes and sticks. Fearing that she too would face a similar fate due to these inhumane acts, she informed the owner of the home and then went to her sister's house on May 27, 2026.
The next day, May 28, this woman returned to the elder's home with her sister and her son and requested the owner to return the eighteen lakhs of rupees she had given. Thereupon, the enraged owner verbally abused them and chased them away from the premises. The woman's further complaint to the police states that she requested legal action to be taken to recover the money fraudulently obtained from her and to ensure justice.
