An historic peace agreement framework, or a memorandum of understanding, has been announced between the United States and Iran, ending the severe armed conflicts that had been ongoing between the two parties since early 2026. This provides a diplomatic solution to the intense unrest that had spread across the entire Middle East region, including direct military clashes between the two countries, impacts on Lebanon, and disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who played a key role as a mediator in these peace talks, officially announced on June 15, 2026, that the final peace draft agreed upon by both parties has been finalized. Commenting on this, US President Donald Trump stated that this agreement has been completed and that he has ordered the immediate lifting of US naval blockades imposed on Iranian ports and the permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz for free shipping. President Trump also emphasized that military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would cease with this agreement.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and officials from the country's Supreme National Security Council have also confirmed that the draft of this memorandum of understanding has been finalized. Accordingly, the official signing of this historic agreement is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19, 2026, and Iran has also announced that military operations will cease immediately and permanently. This new agreement, reached after a two-week temporary ceasefire implemented in April 2026, extends the ceasefire by another 60 days, during which time Iran's nuclear program is to be discussed in greater depth.

This memorandum of understanding is a preliminary framework aimed at de-escalating the current crisis rather than a full peace treaty, and a key point here is the immediate cessation of hostilities on all regional fronts, including Lebanon. The strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil trade passes, has been agreed to be opened without any hindrance, and Iran must remove the mines laid there within 30 days. US naval blockades are also to be lifted in phases, relative to the speed at which shipping traffic returns to normal.

Agreement has also been reached here to ease sanctions imposed on Iran and to release suspended Iranian assets, amounting to between 12 and 24 billion US dollars according to some reports, in several phases, as well as to provide concessions for Iranian oil exports. However, the US side has emphasized that a large amount of upfront funds will not be released to Iran all at once. Iran has once again pledged not to produce nuclear weapons, and detailed discussions on uranium stockpiles, uranium enrichment limits, and international inspections are scheduled to take place within the next 60 days. Nevertheless, Iranian sources state that issues concerning missile programs and Iran's support for various armed groups have been excluded from the current discussions.

This severe war was triggered by attacks launched by American and Israeli forces on Iranian targets and Iran's retaliatory strikes since the beginning of 2026. Disruptions to maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf and conflicts involving Hezbollah in Lebanon caused massive loss of life and property throughout the entire region, as well as a rapid increase in world oil prices. This new agreement marks a unique milestone against a backdrop where previous ceasefire agreements had collapsed, and both sides continued to launch attacks.

Following the news of the peace agreement, crude oil prices in the world market have fallen below the US$82 per barrel mark, and Asian and American stock market indices have shown significant growth. Nevertheless, international analysts still express skepticism regarding the implementation of this agreement and the transparency of Iran's commitments. Israel, in particular, has expressed its strong concern over the conditions reached concerning Lebanon, and criticisms are being raised, stating that this agreement might only be a strategic step to gain time for future negotiations rather than a permanent peace.
