Alawathugoda Police have launched a special operation to arrest a drug trafficker who escaped after dragging a police sergeant for about thirty meters, with the sergeant's hand trapped in the window of a suspicious van, which the sergeant had gone to inspect in Akurana town on the Kandy - Matale main road. This incident was reported in the early hours of the day before yesterday.
This incident occurred while police officers, who had stopped the suspicious van, were inspecting its documents. While the person in the driver's seat was handing over his documents to the police, the front window of the vehicle was suddenly closed, trapping the hand of a police sergeant who was standing nearby. Even with the officer's hand trapped, the driver sped the vehicle forward.
Due to his hand being trapped in the van's window, the police sergeant was dragged forward with the vehicle for about thirty meters before falling to the ground, and the suspect fled the scene with the vehicle. The police officer who was injured in the incident has been admitted to Akurana Hospital for treatment.
Further investigations conducted using the vehicle's documents, which were taken into police custody, have revealed that this van was rented from the Matale area. The police have also identified that it was rented by a prominent drug trafficker. Additionally, information has been revealed that another woman was traveling in the van with the suspect driver at the time of the incident.
Special investigations have already been launched under the direct instructions of Assistant Superintendent of Police Seneviratne, who is in charge of Alawathugoda Police, to arrest the escaped male and female suspects. Accordingly, a team of officers, including Alawathugoda Police Station OIC, Police Inspector Janaka Sanjeewa, is conducting further inquiries into the incident.
