
The government has taken steps to immediately reduce the prices of eighteen essential goods sold through Lanka Sathosa, the government's main retail network, with the aim of providing relief to consumers.
Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, Mr. Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that the existing state mechanism will be operated at its maximum capacity to provide relief to the people in the current situation where the prices of imported goods have increased. Accordingly, the Minister further emphasized that all decisions related to making these essential goods available to consumers at a price even lower than the wholesale price in Pettah have already been taken.
According to this new price revision, the new price of a kilogram of big onions, which was Rs. 249, has been reduced by Rs. 30 to Rs. 219, and the price of a kilogram of white sugar has decreased by Rs. 10 to Rs. 219. Similarly, a kilogram of red lentils, which was Rs. 279, is now Rs. 249, and a kilogram of white cowpea and red cowpea, which were Rs. 799 and Rs. 819 respectively, have been reduced to Rs. 729 and Rs. 749, offering a special benefit of Rs. 70. A kilogram of yellow lentils is sold for Rs. 199 after a reduction of Rs. 20, and the new price of a kilogram of chickpeas is Rs. 344. Additionally, consumers can purchase a kilogram of green gram, which was Rs. 875, for Rs. 849, a kilogram of white urad dal, which was Rs. 975, for Rs. 865, providing a benefit of Rs. 110, and a kilogram of peanuts, which was Rs. 1049, for Rs. 880 after a reduction of Rs. 169. The price of a kilogram of coriander has been reduced by Rs. 60, with its new price recorded as Rs. 439.
Furthermore, the price of a kilogram of wheat flour has been reduced by Rs. 6 to Rs. 163, and rice prices have also been revised favorably for consumers. Accordingly, a kilogram of red kekulu rice is sold for Rs. 179, a kilogram of red kekulu samba for Rs. 229, and a kilogram of samba for Rs. 239. Also, the price of a kilogram of white Nadu has been set at Rs. 209, and a kilogram of red Nadu can be obtained for Rs. 209 after a reduction of Rs. 21, while the new price for a kilogram of Ponni Samba is Rs. 235.
