The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has taken steps to seek public opinion regarding the government's proposal to extend the retirement age limit for judges representing the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. To discuss this matter, the executive committee of the association recently held a special meeting, where it was decided to make a written request to the President not to implement the proposed age extension plan.

In addition, it was also proposed during that committee session that it would be appropriate to ascertain the opinion of the general public on this controversial matter.

Accordingly, the association announces that arrangements have been made to commence this special public opinion gathering program immediately after the official Bar Council meeting of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, scheduled to be held on July 4th. It is expected that this will reveal the definitive positions held by various parties in the legal field as well as in society regarding this new government plan.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Association is also preparing to decide on the next steps regarding this government proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges. Accordingly, the executive council of the association has decided to convene a special general meeting on July 11th, where the proposal for age extension is scheduled to be discussed extensively among the members.
