According to the revelations made today by Minister Ananda Wijepala regarding Suresh Salley, leading international media outlets have today published news naming Salley as the mastermind of the Easter attacks.
On June 10, 2026, international media reporting focused primarily on the new and specific evidence reportedly presented in Parliament, alleging that Sri Lanka's former State Intelligence Service chief, retired Major General Tuan Suresh Salley, was directly involved in the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
India's NDTV channel reported that the Minister of Public Security had stated in Parliament that there was significant evidence that the detained former intelligence chief actively conspired in the 2019 suicide attacks. Malaysia's The Star newspaper, detailing the statement, reported that Minister Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament that Salley "conspired and strategically directed" the attacks, and even identified a church target in the attack that killed 279 people. The report introduced this as the first direct accusation made by a government against him.
The Firstpost website highlighted the content of the new government's accusations. It stated how Salley gathered intelligence on churches using extremist informants weeks before the attack, intensifying the pressure for a legal conclusion seven years after the tragedy.
The Hindu newspaper reported that a Colombo court has ordered the appointment of a five-member panel of specialist doctors to assess the health condition of Salley, who has been hospitalized due to a recent hunger strike protesting his detention.
The same newspaper mentioned that from June 8 to 10, opposition leaders launched a protest in support of the detained former intelligence chief. He had requested better treatment, alleging torture and degrading treatment in custody since late February, and his wife has also made accusations of cruel treatment.
All India Radio, the Indian state broadcaster, reported that the former intelligence chief, arrested on February 25, is still on a hunger strike while receiving treatment at a Colombo hospital and remains under strict medical supervision. India Today, in its social media report, stated that the Sri Lankan government for the first time directly accused Salley of orchestrating the 2019 Easter attacks. Salley denies these allegations.
The Indian Express newspaper pointed out that these latest updates have once again drawn global attention to the documentary previously broadcast by Britain's Channel 4. That documentary originally alleged that Salley planned this conspiracy to manipulate the 2019 presidential election.
Reuters reported that the government stated the former intelligence chief orchestrated the attacks, and Salley, through his lawyer, denied these allegations. AFP reported his arrest in connection with the attacks and the charges of conspiracy and aiding and abetting. Al Jazeera focused on his detention, noting that investigators accuse him of aiding and conspiring in the attacks, which he denies. The Straits Times also reported the government's accusation of "orchestration" and identifying a church target, including his denial.
