A widespread outage of Facebook and Instagram social media networks, affecting millions of users worldwide, was reported today (June 12, 2026). This technical issue began at 7:10 PM Sri Lanka time (approximately 1:40 PM GMT), and services are reported to be still disrupted as of nightfall.
Mixed responses have also been received regarding the WhatsApp service; while some users reported issues, it appears to have not been as severely affected as Facebook and Instagram. Many users have confirmed this information via the Downdetector website and 'X' (Twitter) social media, with automatic logging out of accounts and inability to log back in being a major issue. It is reported that even with correct passwords, users are repeatedly prompted to log in, and some users' accounts were locked while they were actively using them. Additionally, this outage includes new information (Feeds) and Stories not loading, inability to like, comment, or post, search functionalities being disabled, and disruption of the Messenger service. This inconvenience has equally affected both the Facebook mobile application (App) and the website.
Users in many countries, including the United States, India, and the Philippines, have been severely affected by this, with over 1,200 complaints reported from the Philippines alone. Users in the same time zones, including Sri Lanka, also faced this outage during the evening today. It is believed that this situation has also indirectly impacted Meta's business tools, such as Facebook Ads Manager.
As is common during the initial stages of such outages, Meta's official status page has not yet acknowledged any major issues, and the company has not issued an official statement at the time of this publication. However, since all Meta-owned applications use common infrastructure and servers, a single faulty configuration change or routing issue could affect the entire system. There is no evidence yet to suggest a cyberattack (DDoS) is linked to the current outage, and it is presumed to be an internal technical error. Previously, Meta services were also disrupted due to similar technical errors, including a 6-hour global outage in October 2021 and incidents in April and December 2024.
