The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has decided not to take legal action against former First Lady Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe regarding the incident where former President Ranil Wickremesinghe allegedly misused 16.6 million rupees in state funds for a trip to Britain. The said trip was undertaken to attend a graduation ceremony where the University of Wolverhampton in Britain conferred an honorary professorship upon Ms. Maithree Wickremesinghe.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already officially informed the Attorney General that there is insufficient evidence to file charges against Ms. Maithree Wickremesinghe in court.

However, authorities are currently investigating the possibility of taking legal action against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake regarding the use of state funds for this United Kingdom trip. There is a preparation to file indictments against them on charges of criminal misappropriation under the Public Property Act, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) expects to obtain the Attorney General's advice on the matter.

The case related to this incident is scheduled to be called again on June 08 at the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court.
