Latest reports from the Department of Inland Revenue confirm that there are nearly four million people in Sri Lanka who have not yet obtained the Taxpayer Identification Number, or 'TIN' number. Obtaining this number has been made mandatory for every Sri Lankan citizen who has completed 18 years of age, and accordingly, the total population required to possess a TIN number in the country is estimated at 17 million.
However, according to current data, the number has so far been officially issued to only over 13 million people.Meanwhile, with the enactment of the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill No. 11 of 2026, it has been legally mandated to present this TIN number for many key daily and professional activities of individuals. Accordingly, from now on, this number will be essential for opening new bank accounts, obtaining credit cards, and registering various businesses. Furthermore, the Department of Inland Revenue emphasizes that the TIN number must be mandatorily provided for various financial and legal transactions such as motor vehicle registration, renewal of annual revenue licenses for vehicles, and company share transfers.
Moreover, according to the provisions contained in the relevant new amended act, the Taxpayer Identification Number will no longer be considered confidential information in any way.
