The Matara Magistrate's Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of former Minister Basil Rajapaksa for failing to appear in court today (22) for a case related to the purchase of land in the Browns Hill area of Matara using illegally acquired money.
The main accusation against Mr. Basil Rajapaksa is that he used money, the legitimate source of which he could not disclose, to purchase a one-and-a-half-acre land in the Browns Hill area of Matara.
When this case was called today before the Matara Magistrate's Court, the defendant Mr. Basil Rajapaksa did not appear in court, and the lawyers appearing on his behalf informed the court that their client was unwell and therefore unable to appear in court today.
However, after extensively considering the presented facts, the Magistrate rejected the medical reports and ordered the issuance of the warrant, pointing out that the defendant had continuously evaded court.
