Due to a legal issue that has arisen concerning the massive ballroom proposed to be built by President Donald Trump under the White House, the secret underground complex located there is currently receiving significant attention. The Trump administration began demolishing the East Wing of the White House last autumn for this ballroom, which is estimated to cost $400 million.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, stating that this construction was illegal. After months of hearings, a judge ordered on March 31 that all construction work on the ballroom be halted until congressional approval was received. However, some work deemed essential to ensure the safety and security of the White House was permitted to proceed. Later, in another order issued on April 16, all above-ground construction without congressional approval was prohibited, but underground work under the military complex was allowed.
The Trump administration states that this project is extremely important for national security. They further mention that they hope to rebuild the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), which was built during World War II to protect high-ranking White House officials. This secret underground bunker was also used to protect then-Vice President Dick Cheney and several other officials during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Initially, the Trump administration revealed very little information about this facility. However, speaking to the media on March 29, the President stated that the hall being built above ground was merely a shed for what was being constructed underground. A few days later, he said that this construction was essential for the security of the White House and would include bomb shelters, a hospital, and major medical facilities. Nevertheless, administration officials confirm that certain aspects of this project are highly confidential.
