The magisterial inquiry into the death of Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, was called today (12) before Colombo Fort Magistrate Mr. Pasan Amarasekara. During the proceedings, the Colombo Crimes Division presented a report detailing the current progress of the investigations related to the incident, along with two annexures pertaining to the post-mortem examination.

The police also sought the court's permission to obtain a report from the Government Analyst regarding two blood samples taken from the deceased's body. Additionally, investigators informed the Magistrate that during the investigations, significant attention has been focused on the deceased's mobile phone, and it has become extremely difficult to unlock it as it is secured with face recognition technology (Face Lock). Investigators pointed out that attempts to unlock the iPhone 16 model mobile phone by pointing it at the deceased's face were unsuccessful. Therefore, the Crimes Division requested the court to issue an order to refer the said mobile phone to its manufacturing company or another suitable technical institution to unlock it for data examination.

Special attention was also given during the hearing to a neck strap and several other unidentified types of medication found at the scene of death. The Magistrate inquired whether these medications found at the location had already been sent to the Government Analyst, to which the police responded that the items were initially handed over to the medical board that conducted the post-mortem examination. However, they further stated that steps would be taken to send these medications to the Government Analyst for further proceedings.

After considering the submissions, the Magistrate granted all the requests made by the Colombo Crimes Division. Meanwhile, in connection with the extensive investigations into this death, statements have also been recorded by the Colombo Crimes Division from former Sri Lanka national cricket player Mr. Aravinda de Silva and his wife. The court also ordered the further hearing of evidence related to this incident to be postponed until the upcoming 14th.
