Former Pohottuwa local councilor caught in Romanian job trafficking

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) states that a former member of the Hanguranketha Pradeshiya Sabha, who represented the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, has been arrested in connection with a financial fraud committed by promising jobs in Romania. Officers of the Bureau's special investigation unit arrested the suspect on the first of last May.




The suspect former councilor and his wife are accused of defrauding approximately 21.3 million rupees from 16 individuals. They obtained these funds by claiming to provide jobs in the construction sector in Romania. Complainants have further alleged that after obtaining the money, fake job agreements were also provided to the respective individuals.

Investigations have revealed that this main suspect had previously worked in Romania for about two years and meticulously carried out this racket by utilizing the experience gained there.




Following the accusations related to the incident, the suspect fled from his home in the Rikillagaskada area and was found by officers while hiding in a rented house in the Kadugannawa area. Officers from the State Intelligence Service (SIS) also assisted in these overall investigation activities.
