Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala states that a definitive conclusion regarding the sudden demise of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena cannot be reached yet, and he emphasizes that a conclusive statement can only be made after receiving the report of the ongoing post-mortem examination. The police have already launched extensive investigations into all aspects related to this incident, and the Minister further stated that the cause of death will become clear in the future based on the scientific conclusions of the judicial medical officers.
Responding to questions raised about why he was not promptly arrested despite a court warrant, the Minister stated that the police were informed about it yesterday afternoon, and therefore, plans might have been made to arrest him this morning. The Minister pointed out that the police might not have anticipated such a situation occurring at night concerning an individual who had previously been in police custody and released on court orders, and he reiterated that while further details could be inquired from the Inspector General of Police, no definitive statement could be made until the post-mortem examination is concluded.
Meanwhile, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament Sujith Sanjaya Perera stated at a press conference today that the deceased Kapila Chandrasena was the most crucial and key witness in the trial related to the controversial Airbus deal. The MP pointed out that the former CEO has died mysteriously and that the lack of concrete information regarding the circumstances of his death to date is a serious problem.
MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera further stated that there is already strong suspicion and discussion within society as to whether this death was a self-inflicted suicide or occurred due to the instigation of some party. He also emphasized that a full investigation is necessary regarding the suspicious death of an important witness in a high-profile fraud and corruption trial.
